How the board works

Files are the columns, a to h. Ranks are the rows, 1 to 8.
A square's name is its file then its rank: e4 means the e-file, 4th rank.
From White's side, a1 is bottom left. From Black's side, h8 is bottom left.
a1 is a dark square, h1 is light. "Light on the right."
